Cristina Meehan, APRN, PMHNP-BC

Cristina started Liberty Integrated Behavioral Health in 2019 with the vision to provide mental health care that is accessible, flexible and individualized. Cristina is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and provides treatment to individuals across the life span. She specializes in symptom management through psychoeducation and psychopharmacology. Cristina helps individuals understand the physiological responses to stress and trauma with extensive training and certifications in EMDR treatment. She has lectured on stress management and increasing resiliency throughout the state, at grand rounds through the Department of Children and Families, Women’s Consortium, local community events, and first responders. Cristina also provides consultation for newer nurse practitioners looking for additional guidance and support.

Dr. Jay Berkowitz, MD, Psychiatrist

Dr. Berkowitz is licensed by The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with over 32 years of experience. Dr. Berkowitz has a wide array of experience treating individuals with acute and chronic mental health disorders and symptoms. He has held the position of Medical Director in a variety of settings including in-patient programs, correctional facilities, substance use treatment centers, long-term care facilities, and community health centers. He is well known throughout the state of Connecticut for his specialty and expertise in working with mental health disorders effecting older adults to promote healthy aging strategies and increasing access to quality mental health care. National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) honored Dr. Berkowitz with the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in his efforts to improve the lives of people living with mental health conditions.

How to Safely Dispose of Unused or Old Medications in Connecticut

Properly disposing of unused or unwanted medications is essential to protect both the environment and your community. Below are safe and easy options for medication disposal:

1. Drop-Off Boxes

Many police stations have drug drop-off boxes in their lobbies where you can safely dispose of medications. You can drop off:

  • Over-the-counter medications

  • Prescription medications

  • Medication samples

  • Medications for household pets

  • Medicated lotions or ointments

2. Medicine Disposal Envelopes

You can purchase medicine disposal envelopes from chain pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, or Rite Aid. These envelopes allow you to safely send medications for proper disposal.

3. One-Day Medicine Collections

Occasionally, organizations or government agencies sponsor one-day medicine collections. These events are typically:

  • Not regularly scheduled

  • Open only to residents of the sponsoring town

  • Keep an eye out for local announcements to participate.

4. Flushing Medications

You can flush medications down the toilet only if:

  • The medication label instructs you to do so

  • The medication is listed on the FDA’s “flush list”

5. Disposing of Medications in the Trash

If no other options are available, you can dispose of medications in the trash. To ensure safety:

  • Tape the medication container lid shut

  • Place the container inside a non-transparent bag or container to conceal it

Important: Do NOT place medications in your recycling bin. Most garbage in Connecticut is burned at high temperatures, which destroys the medications.
